Broad beta disease
Overview
Broad beta disease: An inherited condition involving a defect in the transport of lipids which causes the development of lipid deposits (xanthomas) under the skin in certain parts of the body.
Symptoms
* Lipid deposits under the skin on palms * Lipid deposits under the skin on fingers * Lipid deposits under the skin on knees * Lipid deposits under the skin on elbows * Lipid deposits under the skin on arms
Causes
hese can have many causes: they may be inherited (congenital diseases); they may be caused by the ingestion or absorption of harmful substances, such as toxins; they can result from poor nutrition or hygiene; or they may arise from injury or ageing. The causes of some diseases are still unknown.
Diagnosis
The phrase "signs of Broad beta disease" should, strictly speaking, refer only to those signs and symptoms of Broad beta disease that are not readily apparent to the patient.
