4th Colloquium Life sciences in Society 2013: Responsible Research and Innovation – A New Tenet for Science’s Relationship with Society

4th Colloquium Life sciences in Society 2013: Responsible Research and Innovation – A New Tenet for Science’s Relationship with Society.

The principle of responsibility appears to be taking hold in Europe as a new, central and clearly expressed tenet of policies and activities in research and innovation. The polysemous nature of the notion of responsibility drives the encompassing quality of this emerging precept, which covers not only the need to limit the adverse effects of new technologies, but also the scientific community’s willingness to focus on resolving major societal challenges, the consideration of ethical issues and the implementation of open and participative decision-making processes, among others. However, the tenet falls short of defining irresponsible research and innovation.

The IFRIS/Genopole 2013 colloquium will be a chance to discuss this new tenet, understand the signification of invoking responsibility and identify the implications of doing so.
