Steatocystoma multiplex
Overview
Steatocystoma multiplex: A rare inherited disorder characterized by numerous skin cysts that may contain a thick substance called sebum. The cysts occur mainly on the chest, abdomen and front of neck.
Symptoms
* Asymptomatic * Smooth skin swelling * Yellowish skin swelling * Inflammation * Suppuration
Causes
It is associated with defects in Keratin 17.
Prognosis
Prognosis for Steatocystoma multiplex: harmless permanent condition
Treatment
The cysts can be moved via excision, though conventional cyst excision techniques have proven impractical, and a specialized regimen is required.Surgery to remove the lesions may be accomplished with excellent cosmetic results when the number of lesions is few. However, in many cases the number and location of lesions may preclude surgical excision. Draining the lesions with a large needle is also temporarily effective. Oral antibiotics in the tetracycline family have been tried with limited success. Accutane has also been tried with mixed results. Improvement was seen in some patients while in other patients the condition actually worsened
