Cretinism
Overview
Cretinism (medical condition): A congenital deficiency of thyroid hormone due to complete or partial failure of the thyroid gland.
Symptoms
Some of the symptoms of Cretinism incude: * No early symptoms - the baby gets some thyroid hormone from the mother * Poor growth * Distorted facial features * Enlarged tongue * Mental retardation
Causes
Some of the causes of Cretinism are included in the list below: * Thyrotropin deficiency * Iodine 131 * Johanson-Blizzard syndrome * Brissaud syndrome type 1 * Sanjad-Sakati syndrome
Treatment
Treatments for Cretinism (Congenital hypothyroidism) include: * Thyroid hormone replacement therapy * See treatment of hypothyroidism * Iodine - possibly used if condition is caused by iodine deficiency
