Lymphomatoid papulosis

Overview

A chronic skin disease characterized by recurring patches of skin bumps and nodules that occur mainly on the trunk, arms and legs. Scarring may occur in some cases. The skin rash heals but reoccurs intermittently over many years.

Symptoms

* Itchy skin rash * Crusty sore * Increased risk of lymphoma

Causes

* The etiology of LyP is unknown. Debate persists over whether (1) LyP is a benign chronic disorder of activated T cells responding to external or internal stimuli or (2) LyP is an indolent T-cell malignancy localized to skin and held in check by the host immune system. * A few investigators have discovered viruslike particles in LyP lesions examined under electron microscopy.

Diagnosis

rashes usually last 2 to 8 weeks but reoccurs often over many years

Treatment

* Lymphomatoid papulosis is difficult to treat and there is no cure for this condition. * Cortisone ointments will sometimes help. * Ultraviolet light treatment will help control lymphomatoid papulosis. * Methotrexate is sometimes used to treat lymphomatoid papulosis.
