Chiari-Frommel syndrome
Overview
A rare condition where galactorrhea and amenorrhea continues for an abnormal length of time (generally longer than 6 months) after giving birth.
Symptoms
* Galactorrhea * Absence of menstruation * Lack of ovulation * Persistent nipple discharge * Emotional liability
Causes
It is due to the continued secretion of prolactin and decreased gonadotropin production. A pituitary adenoma may or may not be present. Symptoms are subjective pain in trunk, back, and head; often mental depression.
Treatment
Some cases of Chiari-Frommel Syndrome resolve completely without treatment (spontaneously); hormone levels and reproductive function return to normal.
