Diabetes insipidus primary central

Overview

A rare dominantly inherited form of diabetes insipidus. It is caused by the progressive degeneration of a part of the hypothalamus which reduces the production of a hormone called arginine vasopressin.

Symptoms

* Wide set eyes * Broad nose * Short nose * Long upper lip groove * Reduced bone mineral density

Causes

* Sarcoidosis * Pituitary tumour * Intracranial space-occupying lesion * Histiocytosis X * Skull fracture * Head injury * Meningoencephalitis * DIDMOAD syndrome * Craniopharyngioma * Sickle cell disease
