FREDERICK, Md. and MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — TeleRare Health™ launched a partnership today with a leading community health system in Maryland, with a focus on expanding patient access to genetic testing, diagnosis, and knowledgeable care for rare and genetics-based diseases.
In the United States, a disease is considered rare if it affects fewer than 200,000 Americans. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there are approximately 10,000 rare diseases, impacting over 30 million Americans.
“Frederick Health has been a steadfast innovator in genetics for over a decade, particularly as a community health system,” said Alex Katz, MD, medical geneticist and Chief Medical Officer of TeleRare Health. “The partnership with TeleRare Health expands access for rare disease patients in the region using convenient video visits to drive better outcomes, all covered by Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial plans alike.”
TeleRare Health allows patients with rare and genomic diseases to access the genetic testing and care they need and ultimately aspires to ensure all patients benefit from the AI revolution in genomics and healthcare overall.
“We’re excited to increase our capabilities through this novel partnership with TeleRare Health,” said Patricia Rice, CRNP, MSN, Clinical Director of Precision Medicine and Genetics at Frederick Health. “Our approach enables Frederick Health to offer the same top quality medical care, cutting edge sequencing technology, and indication-based molecular diagnostics to the Frederick community that a patient would receive at any quaternary or tertiary care center.”
The collaboration between Frederick Health and TeleRare Health includes three components. First, any patient needing an evaluation to determine whether genetic testing is appropriate can be seen within the Frederick Health system, without requiring outside referral. Second, by leveraging technology, telehealth, and asynchronous care as much as possible, patients will not be subject to the lengthy waitlists that often plague genetics and other specialty clinics. Finally, genomics informed medical care will be integrated into a patient’s standard healthcare without any change to existing service lines and clinical workflows.
