Agyria-pachygyria type 1
Overview
Agyria-pachygyria type 1 is an abnormal brain development where the brain fails to develop normally during the fetal stage.
Symptoms
- Small brain
- Mental retardation
- Smooth brain
- Spasticity
- Seizure
- Broad shallow brain gyre
Diagnosis
Different imaging modalities are commonly used for diagnosis:
- Computed tomography (CT) is a lower-resolution imaging modality available, however, cerebral cortex malformations are more easily visualized in vivo
- classified using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment
Treatment
Because pachygyria is a structural defect no treatments are currently available other than symptomatic treatments, especially for associated seizures. Another common treatment is a gastrostomy (insertion of a feeding tube) to reduce possible poor nutrition and repeated aspiration pneumonia.
