The Workshop aims to teach participants from South and South-East Asian countries both the theory and applications of human genetics methods, with the goal of stimulating basic research in this field that incorporates clinical/diagnostic/ prognostic potential. The Workshop also aims to encourage the development of local and regional laboratories and networks where genetic samples will be collected and analysed. The Workshop has been planned as an international forum for scientific exchange on all major areas of Human, Medical and Community Genetics, with opportunities for participants to exchange views on the present state of knowledge, the emergence of new concepts, and the development of innovative techniques relevant to problems of the region.
The Workshop will include a series of lectures, a range of tutorials, and a practical component embodying cutting-edge technology. Topics to be covered will include population genetics, reproductive failure/success, genetic diseases and infectious disease susceptibility, use of disease registries, community-based education, and ethical issues. A one-day bioinformatics course within the Workshop will focus on human genetics on the internet and basic biostatistics for medical scientists. This will include genome and population data analysis; introduction to population structure and differentiation, genetic linkage analysis including – parametric and non-parametric methods for sib-pairs and extended families, and genome-wide association studies. Tools for analysing new generation sequencing data will also be discussed. In addition, two half-day Symposia to be scheduled within the Workshop will be dedicated to the Haemoglobinopathies and to Intellectual and developmental disability.
The course will be held at the Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun, India. There is no registration fee and accommodation will be made available to successful candidates.
